Alderlea

In collection of The Royal Canadian Legion

This pen and ink stipple and line drawing was commissioned, by fellow artist and war veteran Stan Adams, of what at the time was the Brampton Legion. Stan gave the legion the original. It was originally known as Alderlea and was constructed circa 1867 for Kenneth Chisholm, businessman, political figure and son-in-law of John Elliott, a founding father of Brampton.
The original grandeur of the estate included a large front lawn and garden, which is now Gage Park, Brampton’s first municipal park.
The mansion was purchased from the legion by the City of Brampton in 2002 and started renovations in 2010. It is now a special events center since a special opening in 2015.
I drew this from an old photo of Alderlea.

Brush and ink illustration
A couple of years before Ripley’s moved their office from Toronto they were looking for someone to create their feature illustrations for newspapers.
After the initial stage they narrowed the selection down to ten illustrators and we had to do a sample (see above for mine). They then narrowed the roster down to 3 and I was one of the three. We then waited while they made their final decision.
And it wasn’t me. So close but so far.

Lu Robitaille was born in historic Penetanguishene. She and her husband raised their two children in the remoteness of Tadenac Bay, later settling in Huronia. Her deep feelings for Georgian Bay live in the art she creates; her rocks and water reflect the love and warmth she has for this unique part of Canada.

She has a great affection for the character of old farms and lighthouses. Lu has developed a new style and format based on watercolour for her medium.
